Slaves and Slave Owners
After Slavery was made illegal in 1808, over 1 million people were forced to move further south where many blacks were taken to the slave markets in New Orleans. Slaves were sold off one by one and forever separated from their families.
These auctions for selling and buying slaves happened right in the middle of the French Quarters. These slaves were bought in, to work the cotton fields because New Orleans was the headquarters for producing cotton. This cotton was picked my slaves because it was a hot, painful job. Most slaves only made it for 2-3 years. The picked cotton was then turned into products that were sold. New Orleans was the headquarters of selling and buying cotton.
Today there is no sign of this history. But there are many famous plantations in New Orleans which offer tours. If you would like to tour these plantations on our free day here are a couple links to check out. |
